Gibraltar Rocks

Gibraltar Peak and surrounds are a fine place for a bit of climbing, once you can work out where the climbs start among the multi-level maze of boulders. The main outcrop is prominent – on the end of a ridge overlooking Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve. To get there you can approach from Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve, following the marked fire trail. Alternatively, there are several unmarked fire trails on the south side of the ridge (off Corin Dam Road) that can be walked up. The simplest of these takes the first road on the right at the end of the farmland on Corin Dam Road. Park along the Corin Dam Road, then walk along the fire trail straight up the hill to Gibraltar Peak, wiggling around The Fortress.

Most climbs are single-pitch. Many are fully bolted while others are a mixture of bolts and natural gear. Many of the climbs are in the sun for at least part of the day, making this a great place for a sunny winter’s day. Best to get hold of the ACT Granite guide book to navigate around the boulders.
